Sample Itinerary for School Tour to Canberra
The Nation's Capital forms part of the everyday life of many school students across Australia. Through the Civics and Citizens curriculum various attractions are on offer which provide valuable knowledge and experiences that enhance the students learning.
There are many exciting destinations that can be included in your tour. An example of the most popular venues can be found under each tab location on this site, however, the staff at Unearth Ed. of Australia can include any venue required to enhance curriculum units.
Day 1
- Arrive at Sydney Airport on Virgin Blue flight.
- Coach pick up and transfer to Canberra.
- Comfort stop at McDonald's Sutton Forest en route.
- National Capital Exhibition- an interactive centre which depicts the story of the birth of the National Capital. A great starting point for an overview of Canberra.
- Australian Electoral Commission- Electoral Education Centre. A program created to foster an awareness of elections, referendums, and the participation in a representative democracy.
- Arrive at your Canberra accommodation for check in, as arranged y Unearth Ed.
- Dinner at accommodation.
- Coach pick-up for transfer to Black Mountain Tower- this provides a spectacular view of Canberra from an enclosed or open viewing platform.
- Coach set-down at accommodation.
Day 2
- Breakfast at accommodation.
- Parliament House (Guided Tour)- takes you to the Senate and House of Representatives, focusing on the history, role and function of Federal Parliament.
- High Court of Australia- Parkes Place, PARKES. The High Court has three courtrooms, a visual display and a magnificent 7 story high public hall. When court is in session, there may be the possibility to observe proceedings.
- Lunch- provided by acommodation.
- Questacon- The National Science and TEchnology Centre, King Edward Terrace, PARKES. For the ultimate in fun, hands-on science.
- Australian Institute of Sport (Guided Tour), Leverrier Street, BRUCE. This guided tour, conducted by an elite athlete, takes you through the AIS's world class facilities.
- Dinner at accommodation.
- Choose from AMF Bowling, Indoor Rock Climbing, Ice Skating, Zone 3 Laser, Movies or Putt Putt Golf as a night-time activity.
Day 3
- Breakfast at accommodation.
- Cockington Green- Gold Creek Village, NICHOLLS. A fascinating display of model buildings, depicting the history, culture, and heritage or Great Britain and some other countries.
- National Museum of Australia- Acton Peninsula, ACTON. The National Museum of Australia employs a fresh and exciting approach to Australian history, cultures and the environment.
- Lunch- provided by accommodation.
- Old Parliament House- King George Terrace, PARKES. Get an insight into Australia's history and learn about the events and people that shaped the nation.
- National Zoo and Aquarium- Explore this world of animals- ranging from dingoes and koalas, to tigers and snakes.
- Dinner at accommodation.
- National Dinosaur Museum- Cnr Gold Creek Road & Barton Hwy, GUNGAHLIN. Here you can find 10 full-size replica skeletons of dinosaurs. There is also a display of fossil plants and fish.
Day 4
- Early Breakfast at accommodation then depart for snow fields.
- Collect required snow gear at The Ski Co. / Ski Depot, 32 Bradley Street (directly behind McDonald’s), COOMA.
- Depart for snow field of your choice. Begin snow play, tobogganing or ski/boarding.
- Lunch provided by accommodation
- Enjoy the afternoon back on the slopes.
- Return snow gear to The Ski Co. Cooma return to Canberra.
- Dinner at accommodation in Canberra.
- Evening free for some R & R !
Day 5
- Breakfast at accommodation.
- CSIRO Discovery (Discovering Science in Society) - Clunies Ross Road, BLACK MOUNTAIN. Informative and interactive exhibits showcasing CSIRO research. It is a working research facility enabling interaction between scientists and the public.
- Australian War Memorial - Anzac Parade, CAMPBELL - For introductory talk and video continued with a self guided tour. Learn about Australia’s involvement in war exploring the many by displays and the hands on ‘Discovery Room’. Explore, discover and remember…
- Enjoy BBQ lunch on the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin followed by a leisurely guided bike ride with Mr Spoke’s Bike Hire around
- Lake Burley Griffin to end a fantastic week in the Nation’s Capital and Snowy Mountains.
- Depart Canberra aboard Virgin Blue flight to return home.
